Alles wat ik maakte (deel 5)

Everything I made (part 5)

By Martine de Jong

After being immersed in the LUBACH program for months, I resurfaced last week. During the TV season, I hadn't managed to draw and paint consistently. The only time I opened my sketchbook, I started – as so often – with a page full of colored smudges, so I could draw faces in them.

Sometimes it also helps to 'borrow' an image from the internet. In this case, it was an illustration by junoregen. You start by tracing, and from there, something unique emerges naturally. Like this:

The next day, I continued drawing.

I made some more variations with watercolor and marker:

And then it was quiet for a while again. It wasn't until over a month later (last week, that is) that I dared to try again. Starting with what comes easiest helps – so I began again with faces.

In an attempt to work more loosely, I forced myself to use different methods and materials, or combine existing techniques. For example, I painted these trees with watercolor, and then, while they were still wet, I printed them onto a second sheet of paper. I made the leaves with Gelatos, water-soluble crayons.

I colored the space between the trees with colored pencil.

For the drawing below, I used paper towel to dab the watercolor. The dots on the tree trunks are the result of that. I made the leaves with ecoline:

That's all for now. Hopefully, more will follow soon – and you'll be the first to hear about it, of course!

Below are some more sketchbook pages from the past period:
